The Past for the Present and the Future

Passing down endangered traditional cultures to the future in the Pacific Islands!

NGO Pasifika Renaissance (PasiRena) endeavors to preserve and promote cultural and historical heritage in the Pacific Islands to revitalize their traditional cultures and empower local communities.

“Young people are not interested in their island’s traditional culture.”
“Children cannot study their island’s history and culture at schools.”
“Elders’ knowledge and techniques have been lost without being documented.”
In the Pacific Islands, precious traditional knowledge, which has been passed down from their ancestors for thousands of years, has been disappearing without being passed down to younger generations or being recorded properly in rapid modernization.

PasiRena makes various efforts from different angles to enable Pacific Islanders to gain a deeper understanding of their historical and cultural heritage so as to assist their movement of revitalizing (“renaissance”) their traditions.

In 2014, those concerned persons who have a keen awareness of the decline of traditional cultures in the Pacific Islands established PasiRene as a Specified Nonprofit Corporation/NGO in Japan.

In the Pacific Islands, rich traditional cultures, including unique customs, dances, and crafts, have flourished on individual islands for thousands of years.
